Troop Upcoming Items of Interest…

At the troop committee meeting a couple of notable items came up…

Scouts for Food

We are all feeling the pinch of the current economy. Some worse than others. The Lord is my Help soup kitchen in Ocean Springs is one of the great local organizations that help those in need. So for the next two Monday night meetings we will be collecting non-perishable food items to be given to the soup kitchen no later than the 17th of this month. We are asking that every scout bring in a minimum of 5 items so that others may have a good Thanksgiving. We will also be doing the same thing for Christmas. I would like to see if we can get scouts in uniform to deliver the items on the 17th. Mr Galle and I will also be there.

Adult Volunteer Recognition

Each year the district has a banquet and recognizes the outstanding adult volunteers in the district. Anyone of us can nominate any registered adult for a number of awards. These awards are:

  • District Award of Merit (Pine Burr Award) the highest award given by a district.
  • District Scouter of the Year
  • Scoutmaster of the Year
  • Asst Scoutmaster of the Year
  • Boy Scouter of the year (Troop Committee)
  • Scouting Family of the Year, Yes the whole family
  • District Certificate of Appreciation.

I have the forms and will have them at the next meeting. The deadline for submission is 31 December 2010. We all know our adult volunteers lets recognize them so everyone else knows them to.
The banquet is currently scheduled for Thursday Jan 14, 2011 at Scrantons Restaurant in Pascagoula. Cost is $5.00 per person for the awards and everyone is on their own to order from the menu. There will be a sign-up list posted and we will collect the 5.00.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Veterans day is right around the corner. The VFW in Ocean Springs will have a flag retirement on this coming Sunday at 3:00 pm. I highly encourage all scouts and families to attend. Scouts should be in full class “A” uniforms.

Carl “Boo” Galle Inducted into National Hall of Leadership

Mr Boo at Camp Tiak - June 2010

During a special ceremony on Sunday, at the close of the BSA Centennial Parade in Washington, D.C., nearly 300 Scouts and Scouters, including our very own Scout Master Carl “Moo” Galle, were named as recipients of an honor bestowed upon a small contingent of Scouting’s finest living examples of Scouting service and virtue; induction into the National Hall of Leadership.

According to Chief Scout Bob Mazzuca, the National Hall of Leadership 100th Anniversary Celebration program is, “a one-time opportunity to recognize and thank Scouts, their leaders and any living person that has served as a scouting volunteer for the extraordinary difference they have made in the lives of others through their leadership.”

Nominations were accepted earlier this year during a nationwide campaign for consideration into the Hall of Leadership. More than 7,000 nominations were received; all of which are now a permanent record at the BSA 100th Anniversary archive at the National Scouting Museum. Inductees could be of any age or gender. The only requirement was that they had a profound impact on someone else. Also, only living individuals were eligible for nomination.

All adults must be current in their youth protection.

SAFETY AFLOAT – it appears there is an interest in water activities this coming year. We need adults who will be participating in these activities to go on line and get their safety afloat certification. Bring a copy of the certificate to Mary Reese.
